This book could easily be read for a book club (so many topics to discuss), as an assignment, or simply for pure enjoyment. The characters are believable and the content of the story is both current and relevant. We learn quite a lot about both Maddie and Jasmine, that they are much more than "The Loner" and "The New Kid", which makes us care about them. The addition of poetry sets this book apart. It encourages active reading, making us stop and think a bit about the meaning interpreted by the characters as well as our own.

Jasmine and Maddie Christine Pakkala 9781620917398 Books Reviews

Jasmine and Maddie is the story of two girls from opposite sides of the tracks making their way through the muddy waters of middle school. Jasmine believes Maddie has it all; money, a loving in tact family, etc. While Jasmine is the new girl who just lost her father and moved to Clover, CT for a fresh start. Maddie only sees a beautiful girl who is getting lots of attention from her peers and doesn't seem to struggle socially like she does. The two are paired up in poetry class and are forced to be around each other. With several fits and starts, eventually a friendship develops.

I loved the development of the characters. They were both relatable in very different ways. The author has a wonderful way of maintaining the voice of a middle school girl and making us feel their angst as they make their way. I think it is a wonderful book for girls entering middle school to help them understand that everyone has their own inner struggles no matter how they appear on the outside. This life lesson is perfectly illustrated in "Jasmine and Maddie".
asmine and Maddie by Christine Pakkala
Boyds Mill Press, 2014
Realistic Fiction
203 pages
Recommended for grades 5-8

Pakkala certainly captures the world of a middle school girl in this realistic fiction story about two seemingly different girls. Many middle school girls will find an ally in this text. Be it either with Jasmine, struggling to make a new life for herself in a new town after recently losing her father, or with Maddie, the girl who has it all, nice house, big family, etc.
But Maddie is losing her place alongside her best friend, and is secretly feeling as lost as Jasmine is.
This story explores friendships, relationships, right vs. wrong, pressures, family dynamics and economics, school, etc.
This is a tough review to write. On one hand, I really enjoyed it. On the other hand, there were many flaws. I wish GoodReads had half stars available, because I'd rate Jasmine and Maddie as a 2.5.

Thank you, NetGalley and Boyds Mill Press, for this free book to review!

Things I liked

1. The girls were in eighth grade. Not nearly enough books feature thirteen year olds.

2. The poetry was beautiful.

Things I disliked

1. Everyone felt so...shallow. Everyone (especially Ian and Maddie) had so much potential though.

2. It's really difficult for an adult to write thirteen year olds. Christine Pakkala did a decent job, but left something to be desired.

3. Jasmine's and Maddie's voices sounded the same.

Would I read other books by this author? Maybe. If I'm looking for a light reading, this would hit the spot.
Grades 5-6

I felt like a twelve year old girl again as I read this book! The best part of the book for me is the focus on the friendships between girls without the boy nonsense. Although there ends up being a boy for each girl at the end, there isn't any romance, kissing or other stuff to get in the way of the story of the two girls and how their friendship came to be. I love the way Jasmine keeps doing the wrong thing. The author has developed the character enough so that the reader cares about Jasmine and we want her to be better. I think fans of Wendy Mass books will enjoy this story.

The cover of this book has high kid appeal as well. It is white with a photograph of black boots (Jasmine's boots) in a strong step pose on the top and upside down on the bottom is a more awkwardly posed set of feet in Converse style sneakers and bright green pants (Maddie's feet).
I read it in one sitting. I LOVED IT!! Cried at the end. But in a good way. I liked the poetry a lot and I usually hate poetry. My one problem I was kind of more interested in Jasmine's story than in Maddie's story. It would be interesting to read a sequel but tell it only from Jasmine's point of view?
My 7th grade daughter, bless her soul, is not an avid reader. It is always a struggle for us to get her to read. However, we had no problem with Jasmine and Maddie by Christine Pakkala. I won't spoil the story for all of you, but it is a fantastic read for middle school readers, and even adults can get a kick out of it. I highly recommend it.
